About Shelter Island and the Dering Harbor Inn: Shelter Island is just 2 hours from New York City, and a ferry boat ride away from CT. It is a paradise of an island nestled between the two forks on the east end of Long Island. We have a superb location directly on Dering Harbor and are within a five minute walking distance to main village where you will find shops, markets, restaurants/bars. The nearest public beach is approximately a mile away. We sell beach passes in season, and have a limited number of bicycles available for guests. The island is a place to come to for relaxation, and to take in its unique natural beauty, in places such as the Mashomack Wildlife Perserve, which occupies over one third of the island. Kayaks are available to rent and also can be delivered right to the inn. The island is particularly noted for its outdoor activities, such as: golf, boating, fishing, tennis, biking, hiking, jogging, swimming. We offer guests free use of the workout room at the gym, along with discounts for classes and tennis at the on-site gym, Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness Center located on premises (operated and owned separately by Moussa Drame'). It is close to the North ferry which leaves from Greenport. Taxi service is available, boats can be chartered out of Greenport. The South ferry brings you to the south shore area's from Sag Harbor to Montauk. Vintage tours from the local LI wineries are available. We are open to wedding and events on the beautiful waterfront bluff area. In the off-season, stay 2 nights and the 3rd night is free Sunday - Friday. Weekly, monthly, and season discounted rates are available.
