Rooms vary considerably in size, but they can be very spacious and equipped with all the basics needed should you opt for self catering. The quietness of the location adds to the already obvious attractive features, as does the light flooding in through large windows.

Staff members are few and far between - and sometimes difficult to find - but they  are very friendly and there's a nice warm welcome at check-in.

The lack of virtually any catering on-site is negated by the easy access to nearby breakfast cafes and dining restaurants. The lack of breakfast here is hardly noticed.

Maybe you are security conscious so you request that the room is not cleaned - you'll do it yourself. Fine; increasingly, more of us prefer this arrangement. But then, when you are out, they defeat the object entirely by coming in and open all the windows. Doh!

If the gods are scowling at you, prepare to finish up in a tiny room with an old bed, terminally soiled towels and an over presence of dust and general grime. An early rise and call to action is guaranteed by the early morning activity at the neighboring naval establishment. Some rooms are severely sub-standard.

There's no food to complain about! No breakfast or evening dinner. They advertise a coffee maker in the room but, quite often, it doesn't materialize. There is coffee available at all times in the lobby, but it isn't the solution if you fancy a quick slurp at 2 am, wearing just your 'jim-jams'!
