Xchanging Boat Race (London, United Kingdom)

The Boat Race, sponsored by Xchanging, is an annual rowing race on the Thames tideway between rowing eights from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It has been a fixture since 1829 and an annual event since 1856, except for the first and second world war years. Since 1845 the course has been fixed at 4 miles 374 yards between Putney and Mortlake. It is a challenging event, with crews having to contend with three bends, the tide, the flow of the river and the prevailing weather. The standard of the crews is world-class and the stretch is covered in under 17 minutes. Including the 2010 race, which Cambridge won, the series results stand at Cambridge 80 wins, Oxford 75 and 1 dead heat (1877). Over the years many traditions have grown up around the event: the issuing of the official challenge by the previous year’s loser, the 1829 gold sovereign used for the toss, the winning cox being thrown in the river. The event attracts large crowds creating a carnival atmosphere, and the race is also televised. Race day is late March or early April, the precise day varying according to the tides. The timing is set for a Saturday afternoon and one hour before high water at Putney.
