West Gate Towers (Canterbury, United Kingdom)

West Gate is the best preserved part of the medieval city wall which surrounded Canterbury. This gateway on the west side stood over the road to London and modern traffic still has to negotiate it. The huge round twin towers are now a distinctive landmark second only to the Cathedral. The gateway was fortified and was once used as a prison. In keeping with its past there is a museum inside of guns and armour, from the Civil War up to World War 2. Former prison cells and murder holes can still be seen. The museum is open all year from Mondays to Saturdays 11am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. It is closed on Good Friday and Christmas week. Access to the museum is by a spiral staircase, which is not suitable for disabled visitors.
