The Walker Art Gallery, also known as the National Gallery of the North, was opened by the 15th Earl of Derby on 6 September 1877. The Gallery houses an important international art collection from the 14th to the 20th century. The collection ranges from European Old Masters and Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite works to more modern British works. There are paintings by Rubens, Poussin, Rembrand and Gainsborough. The Gallery is situated in the centre of Liverpool next to the World Museum of Liverpool and opposite the entrance to the Birkenhead tunnel. The Liverpool Tourist Information Centre at Queens Square is 5 minute walk away. Entrance to the gallery is free. Opening hours Daily 10am-5pm. Closed - 24 December (from 2pm), 25, 26 December 2005, 1 January 2006.
