Vendeuvre Castle (Vendeuvre, France)

The chateau in Vendeuvre was constructed in 1750 and is still owned by the Le Forestier family who also reside there. The Le Forestiers are descendants of the Counts of Flanders who came to France when their cousin Queen Mathilda, the daughter of the Count of Flanders, came to Normandy to marry William the Conqueror in 1049. The grounds and parts of the mansion are open to public. In the former Orangery visitors can see one of the largest collections of miniatures in the world. On display are more than seven hundred items of period furniture and several thousands of objects, including masterpieces of craftsmen, models and mock-ups, religious furniture, children’s furniture, miniature silverware and more. The house itself is a typical example of an aristocratic 18th-century Normandy country house, built by Jaques-Francois Blondel. The ground floor is open to public and several of the rooms and the antique furniture can be seen, including a fully equipped 18th-century kitchen, wash-house and a collection of antique pet kennels. The grounds comprise of a classical French garden that has been restored to the original plans, a practical garden with several buildings like a 19th century dovecot, pyramid-shaped ice-house and a goat house and the “surprise water gardens. Here visitors can enjoy a wealth of highly unusual water features but will have to be prepared to get wet. Further there is a maze, and India inspired garden with elephant fountain, a shell grotto and several aviaries. The castle also features a small child’s play area, gift shop, picnic area and refreshment area. Tickets for partial visits are available. Parking facilities are in front of the ceremonial gate. Opening times: May September: daily 11am to 6pm April, October and November: Sundays and on public holidays 2pm to 6pm Easter and autumn half-term: daily 2pm to 6 pm
