Tramway (Glasgow, United Kingdom)
Tramway is a venue in Glasgow for visual and performing arts. As its name suggests, it was once the main tram terminus in the city, and with the demise of trams in the 1960s became a transport museum. When that facility moved it was threatened with destruction but was saved as one of the initiatives when Glasgow was European City of Culture in 1990. Its vast space gives great flexibility for both large and small productions. It is divided into areas of varying size for different purposes. The ground floor has Tramway 1 which is the main theatre area. Its seating capacity of 600 can be configured to accommodate the demands of the performance. Tramway 2 is the main visual arts exhibition space and is “one of the largest single galleries in Europe”. It retains the tramlines and steel girders of the original building. Other spaces are dedicated to arts workshops, classes and presentations. The complex also includes the Hidden Gardens, created in what was a field of debris. There is a Café Bar with views of the Hidden Garden, which also provides free wifi.
