The Links (Whitley Bay, United Kingdom)

Whitley Bay is a coastal town about eight miles east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It developed rapidly as a beach resort with the expansion of the Victorian railway network. Its heyday was the 1920s when factories north of the border closed for the summer break and the town saw a large influx of visitors during Scots Week. The Links is a wide expanse of parkland about one mile in length which runs along the sea front. It provides a variety of walkways, gardens, seating, cafes and sea views. There are ramps and steps at regular intervals which provide access to the lower promenade and Whitley Bay sands. The Links is bounded at its southern end by the Spanish City, a white domed listed building immortalized in the song “Tunnel of Love” by Dire Straits. It was the site of an amusement park which is now under redevelopment. At its northern end is a miniature golf course. The Links provides an arena for outdoor exhibitions through the year (the North East Motor Show) and a funfair is erected on Bank Holiday weekends. There is parking space available in the council-run off-street car parks (80 pence for two hours). Access to The Links and the beach is free. Dogs must be kept on a lead. Times of prohibition of dogs from parts of the beach is clearly posted.
