The Clink Prison Museum (London, United Kingdom)
The Clink Prison Museum is housed in the basement of a former warehouse in the London district of Southwalk on the south bank of the Thames. It re-creates the original Clink Prison that was located on the same site, but destroyed by fire during the Gordon Riots of 1780 and never rebuilt. The Clink Prison was one of England’s oldest prisons. Dating from the 12th century it was in use right up to the point of its destruction and housed both men and women. It was certainly the oldest women’s prison in England and possibly the oldest prison for men also. For many years it was used for religious non-conformists and even for priests that refused the Oath of Allegiance. Over the six centuries that the Clink Prison was in use it housed several well-known criminals and gained a notorious reputation. The Clink Prison is open daily from 10am until 6pm (Monday to Friday) and from 10am under 9pm (Saturday and Sunday. Admission prices are: Adult - £5.00 (6 Euros) Children (under 16) - £3.50 Concessions - £3.50 (4 Euros) Family tickets are also available that allow admission for 2 adults and 2 children.
