St Paul's Cathedral (London, United Kingdom)
The dome of St Paul’s Cathedral at the top of Ludgate Hill is a feature of London’s skyline. Although there has been a church here for nearly 1500 years, it was the rebuilding by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666 that gives us what we see today. St Paul’s is the cathedral of the London diocese and the church where great state occasions take place. Unlike many English cathedrals St Paul’s is neo-classical, crowned by a dome, the second largest in the world. The interior is more open and decorated than the gothic cathedrals. Monuments and tombs to the famous abound, from Wren himself right up to the memorial of the US airmen killed in world war 2. Visitors can climb to the top of the dome for a view across London. Halfway up the dome is the whispering gallery where an acoustic effect carries a whisper from one side of the dome to the other. There is an entrance fee, and additional fees for guided tours. Visits may be restricted by services, events, recordings or restoration work. Please check the website for current times and charges. There are facilities for the disabled, including wheelchair access and induction loops, guide dogs are allowed.
