St Pancras Old Church (London, United Kingdom)
St Pancras Old Church in London is believed to stand on one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in England. The history of the area as a place of worship dates back to at least 314AD although the current church that stands on the spot is largely of Victorian origin. This church is dedicated to the Roman martyr Saint Pancras, who also gives his name to the London Borough of that name and its railway station. The present church was built in 1847 although some of the original Norman masonry was used in its construction. It was modernised in 1948 after suffering damage during the Second World War. Since 1954 St Pancras Old Church has been listed as a Grade 2 listed building. The churchyard provides the largest area of green space in the vicinity and contains several old tombs including one designed by the architect Sir John Soane for his wife and himself. This tomb is now a Grade I listed structure. Admission to the church and its grounds are free.
