St Mary's Cathedral (Hildesheim, Germany)

St Mary’s Cathedral dates back to the early 11th century. It was built in the typical Romanesque style of the Ottonic period, following a symmetrical plan with two apses. The cathedral church was extended several times over the following centuries and completely destroyed during WW2. After the war it was rebuilt, the works lasted from 1950 to 1960. Today the cathedral is especially famous for its artworks. Notable pieces of medieval art to be seen include the double bronze doors commissioned by bishop Bernward in 1050, a 15ft high bronze column with reliefs from the life of Christ, the St Epiphanus Shrine with reliquaries of the patrons of the dome, the sarcophagus of St Godehard and more. Further the cathedral is home to a legendary 1000-year old rosebush that climbs the wall of the cathedral’s apse. According to the legend Hildesheim will never decline as long as the rose survives. The rosebush has survived the complete destruction of the cathedral during WW2, it was found under the rubble with its roots intact. A small gothic chapel, dedicated to St Anne, is located in the courtyard of the cathedral. St Mary’s Cathedral has been, together with St Michael’s Church, declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opening hours: Summer: Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. Winter: Monday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm.
