St Giles Cathedral (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)
St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh is the premier cathedral of the Church of Scotland and stands on the Royal Mile midway between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood House. It hosts important state occasions and events of thanksgiving and has within it the chapel of the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s chivalric order. As with many ancient cathedrals, there is over 1000 years of evidence of a church on this site. It was at the centre of events relating to the Reformation and the Covenanters both of which established the style of the Church of Scotland. John Knox, the leader of the Reformation in Scotland, was minister here in the 1570s. In the following century attempts by King Charles to impose episcopacy led to the signing of the National Covenant in 1643, which can still be seen today in the cathedral. Famously, the feelings of the Scots were expressed by Jenny Geddes who allegedly threw a stool at the Dean during a service. The building visitors see today is a result of 19th century restoration work and the stained glass dates from the same period. Entry is free although visitors are asked to make a donation.
