St Clement Danes Church (London, United Kingdom)

St Clement Danes church in London is known as the Royal Air Force church. Gutted by incendiary bombs in 1941 its rebuilding was organised by the RAF and it was reconsecrated in 1958. Squadron badges decorate the interior and are set into the slate floor. Outside are statues of Lord Dowding, who commanded the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and Sir Arthur “Bomber” Harris who as Marshall of the RAF organised the bombing campaigns against Germany. A church has existed here for over 1000 years – it was allegedly founded by the descendants of the Danes who ruled much of England, and St Clement is the patron saint of mariners. It survived the Great Fire of London in 1666, although it was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the 1680s along with many other churches at that time. Samuel Johnson was a member of the congregation and William Webb Ellis, the “inventor” of rugby, was a rector. It is one of several St Clement churches claiming to be the original of the “Oranges and Lemons” nursery rhyme. It stands on an “island” in the middle of the Strand and is open daily from 9am to 4pm.
