Southwell’s first church probably dates back to 627AD but the Minster that we find today was constructed in 956AD, possibly on the same site as the original church. The earliest remaining parts of the building include parts of the floor and the lintel above the main doorway. In 1108 the Minister was largely rebuilt by the Normans and large sections of the building still date from this period. However the church was badly damaged during the English Civil War and it was damaged further by a fire in 1711 and it was not until the Victorian era that it was once again restored to its former glory. In 1884 the Minster became the Cathedral church of the newly created Diocese of Southwell and today it is the second largest Cathedral in the county of Nottinghamshire. It is a Grade 1 listed building and is considered to be one of the most important churches in England. It is especially famous for its unique twin spires which are known locally as ‘pepper pots’. There is no admission charge to enter the Minster but a recommended donation of £3 per adult is suggested. A digital audio tour is available for a cost of £3 and guided tours can also be arranged. Wheelchair access is available in most parts of the building and leaflets and tour guides are available in large print and Braille.
