Accommodations in London near Southwark Cathedral (London, United Kingdom)
Southwark Cathedral (London, United Kingdom)
Southwark Cathedral is located near London Bridge on a site which has been home to churches for more than 1000 years. The main structure of the Cathedral as it is today dates to the period 1220 -1420, which makes it the first Gothic church in London. The church has suffered severely from fires and other disasters over the centuries, but has always been repaired and re-built. Thirteenth-century arcades and the remains of two Norman doorways in the north aisle can still be seen. Also to be seen is the medieval canopied tomb of John Gower (a poet and friend of Chaucer who died in 1408) and a memorial for William Shakespeare. The cathedral is fully accessible and offers baby changing facilities. Admission is free but a minimum donation of £4 per person is suggested.
