Southwark Bridge (London, United Kingdom)

Southwark Bridge spans the River Thames in London and is situated between Millennium Bridge and Cannon Street Railway Bridge. It links Southwark to the city of London and is designed for both road traffic and pedestrians. Opened in 1921, Southwark Bridge is an arch bridge that is easily recognised as it is painted green and yellow. It was built by Sir William Arrol and Company according to a design by Sir Ernest George and Sir Basil Mott. The City Bridge Trust currently owns and maintains Southwark Bridge. Restoration work, involving grit blasting and painting, was carried out on the bridge over a three-year period and was completed in April 2011. The nearest underground station is Cannon Street, situated at the northern end of the bridge. The main attractions in the area, however, are situated on the south bank of the River Thames. These include the art gallery Tate Modern, the Clink Prison Museum and the Globe Theatre which hosts performances of Shakespeare’s places. The Financial Times and Ofcom buildings are also in the vicinity of Southwark Bridge.
