Southsea Castle (Southsea, United Kingdom)

Southsea Castle is located on Clarence Esplanade in, overlooking the waters of the Solent. It dates from 1544 and was constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to protect the coast against foreign invaders. Just one year later the Mary Rose sank while the king was at the castle watching it set sail. In 1627 the keep was destroyed by fire. The Parliamentary army seized the castle in 1642 during the English civil war. A section of Southsea Castle was damaged by an explosion in 1759. Restoration work took place in 1814. A lighthouse that was built adjacent to the castle in the 1820s is still in use today. Visitors today can go along the tunnel that was built during the nineteenth century to strengthen its defences. In 1960 Southsea Castle ceased being a military base and was bought by Portsmouth City Council. Its appearance now is as it was in the nineteenth century. It is open to visitors, free of charge, from mid May until the end of October every day except Mondays. Opening times are from 10am until 5pm. The Yellow Kite Cafe on-site offers a healthy menu in addition to hot and cold drinks. Parking spaces are available on Clarence Esplanade as well as at the nearby D-Day museum
