Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre (Silchester, United Kingdom)

The Roman town at Silchester was known as Calleva Atrebatum after the Iron Age tribe, the Atrebates, whose settlement this was. The Romans set up a base here soon after 43AD and laid out the town in a traditional grid pattern with a forum in the middle and public buildings, baths and temples. It stood at an important crossroads: from here roads ran to London, Chichester and Salisbury. Two major sights remain, the walls and the amphitheatre. The stone walls were constructed in the 3rd century on to an existing earth rampart. They form an almost unbroken perimeter and are one of the best preserved Roman town walls in the UK. A trail of about 3km can be followed round them. The amphitheatre lies just outside the town and dates from the beginnings of the town in the middle of the 1st century. It has a clearly defined elliptical shape with two entrances and tiers of seating. It could accommodate about 4,500 spectators. The walls and amphitheatre are under the care of English Heritage but the land inside is council-owned and used for agriculture. No Roman buildings are visible above ground but Reading University has on-going excavations and gives tours of the dig. For details see www.silchester.rdg.ac.uk. Entrance to the walls and amphitheatre is free and there is a car park with explanatory leaflets available. Visitors should be aware that the walk from the car park to the walls is about a quarter of a mile, and the trail round the walls is uneven.
