Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (London, United Kingdom)

This was the first traditional Hindu Mandir to be built in Europe and now attracts over 500,000 visitors every year. It was constructed from 2,820 tonnes of Bulgarian limestone and 2,000 tonnes of Italian Carrara marble, which was shipped out to India where it was carved by local skilled volunteers that sent it back in pieces like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. Opening in the August of 1995 it took just three years to complete and its presence now dominates the London skyline. The Mandir is a sacred house of God and therefore all visitors are requested to follow a set of strict rules and guidelines that includes the removal of shoes.
