The former summer residence of King Frederic William IV of Prussia can be found southwest of Sanssouci Palace. The King ordered the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel to redesign the former manor house while he was still crown prince and personally took part in designing and planning the park and palace. The building works lasted from 1826 to 1829 and the palace is modeled in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Today it is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The garden, which was partially located on marshy grounds, was transformed into an English style landscaped garden by Peter Joseph Lenné. It is possible to visit the interior of the castle, although only by taking part in a guided tour. To be seen are several rooms with their original furnishings, including the apartments of the royal couple.Charlottenhof Palace and Park, as part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites
