Accommodations in Berlin near Schloss Charlottenburg (Berlin, Germany)
Schloss Charlottenburg (Berlin, Germany)
Schloss Charlottenburg is Berlin’s largest palace and the only remaining Hohenzollern Royal residence remaining in the city. First named Lietzenburg (from the village of Lietzow where it was located), the palace was built by Elector Frederich III (who later became Kaiser Frederich I) in 1699 as a summer residence for his wife, Sophie Charlotte. After a series of mostly 18th-century expansions, the residence grew into a complex that includes the Old Palace, the several added wings, the Orangeries, the Annex, the Belvedere Teahouse, Queen Louise’s mausoleum, and Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm II’s summerhouse. The palace is surrounded by a baroque garden and is famous for its Oriental porcelain collection. This attraction is located in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district and can be reached by public transport (buses 109 and 309). Check the official Web site for admission fees and public hours.
