Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, Spain)
A Roman Catholic Cathedral in a suburb of Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia was designed by Antoni Gaudi and is still under construction. Work began in 1882 and is likely to continue until at least 2026.
One of Spain’s top tourist attractions, it receives over 2 million visitors annually from all over the world. With 18 spiralling towers - representing the Apostles, the Evangelists, Jesus and Mary, and 3 grand facades of the Nativity, the Glory and the Passion - the exterior is a mix of geometrical and metaphysical ideas drawn out by Gaudi and carried on by a succession of architects after his death in 1926.
The Interior is only partially complete, and visitors are limited to views of the 60 metre central vault and it’s naves. Extensive use of Gaudi’s unique interplay between complex geometry and liturgical symbolism is to be found here.
The construction of the building, which in 2009 is likely to be more than 18 million euros is entirely funded through private donations and visitor ticket fees. It is planned to be partially open for worship by 2010.An eponymous Metro Station, the junction of Lines L2 and L5, is located beneath the square on which the Cathedral stands.
