Ruïnes d' Empúries (L´Escala, Spain)

The Ruïnes d’ Empúries (site of Empuries) is on the Costa Brava just outside the town of L’Escala near the small village of Sant Marti. It was the site of two ancient settlements, a Greek one dating from the 5th century BC and a Roman one from the 3rd century BC. Excavations are still going on and there is considerably more to uncover. The Greek town itself comprises two settlements, the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town was originally on an island but the channel has silted up and it is now part of the mainland. The Greek remains consist of a walled precinct containing various temples and houses decorated with mosaics and paintings. The larger Roman settlement was square in shape with a central forum, and temples and houses, also with mosaics and paintings, have been uncovered. An amphitheatre lay outside the walls. A museum displays finds from the excavations, and there are descriptive panels on the site itself. Opening times are 10am to 8pm June to September and 10am to 6pm the rest of the year. There is car parking, and it is also accessible by foot from L’Escala along the coastal path.
