Royal Yacht Britannia (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

The Royal Yacht Britannia has been moored at Leith, near Edinburgh, since she was decommissioned in 1997 and is now a visitor attraction. During the 44 years of active service, the Yacht was used for official visits, covering over 1 million miles, and visiting more than 600 ports in 135 countries. It was launched during the present queen’s reign and she played an active role in its interior design so that it was a place where she could “relax”. Nevertheless it was also a floating official residence and entertained world statesmen and leaders as if it were a royal palace. It had to be staffed as such, and as well as a complement of naval personnel, the royal household brought the numbers up to around 300. The tour is self-guided with an audio handset and includes the State Rooms, engine room, crew’s quarters and the on-board garage complete with Rolls Royce. There is a tea room on board. Opening times and prices are on the website, which also has full details of accessibility for wheelchairs and pushchairs and for the visually impaired. The Yacht can also be hired for corporate events and entertaining.
