Royal Ascot was founded by Queen Anne in 1711 and takes place in the third week in June each year. It is a five-day meeting and each afternoon starts with the Royal Parade, where Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal family arrive in a horse drawn carriage up the centre of the track. The Royal Enclosure requires formal dress and hat wear and admission is restricted. The Grand stand was completely rebuilt in 2006 by Laing O’Rourke. There are 16 Group races over the five days amongst which the Ascot Gold Cup which takes place on Ladies Day. £3,000,000 of prizes are awarded and over 300,000 spectators attend the races. Many spectators choose to bring their own picnic hampers for lunch as local restaurant capacities are limited and reservation is a must. Needless to say that Royal Ascot week is of great importance to punters and bookmakers. Royal Ascot is one of Europe`s most famous race meetings and a major event in the British social calendar. Entrance prices range from £45 to £70 for a Grandstand seat and around £17 for a parking space.
