Accommodations in Idstein near Roman Watch Tower (Idstein, Germany)
Roman Watch Tower (Idstein, Germany)
At the L3026 that runs from Idstein in direction to Niedernhausen you can find this reconstruction of an original Roman watch-tower. The defense line of the Limes Germanicus passed from here and the Limes hiking trail of Idstein-Dasbach is nearby. Watchtowers like this could be found within range of sight all along the Limes. If enemies came in sight smoke signals would have been given from tower to tower. The tower in Idstein would have originally been accessed by the soldiers via a ladder that led up to a small opening in height of the second floor. For the modern day visitor the access is somewhat easier, as a door on ground level has been added. The tower is open for visitors on every first Sunday of the month at 1pm from April to October. Individual tours can be arranged, please call the telephone number given for more information. Every year a Roman Festival is held at the Idstein watch tower, during which Roman crafts and technology are demonstrated and Limes bread is being served. The Idstein Watch tower is part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
