Rebuilt City Centre (Le Havre, France)

Following extensive damage by bombing in World War II, the centre of the city was rebuilt between 1945 and 1964 under the direction of architect Auguste Perret. The result was “unity and integrity” combining the pre-existing town pattern with a new approach to town planning. The pioneering development won UNESCO World Heritage site status in 2005. Perret’s use of reinforced concrete revolutionised French architecture and his vision was most fully realised in this large-scale project. Pre-war landmarks such as Notre Dame Cathedral with its bell tower, the St. Francis Church and the Museum of Natural History were incorporated into the plan and a memorial to those who died was an integral part. The 250 hectare area is the administrative, commercial and cultural centre of the city.
