Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate (Styal, United Kingdom)

Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate was once a cotton mill opened by the Greg Family. Child apprentices were also housed on the Estate, in the nearby “Apprentice House” which is now open for timed tours. Workers at the mill were often housed in the nearby Styal Village, and each house had a privy and an allotment. The tour itself works through four key areas of Mill Life: Introduction, People, Process and Energy. The Mill is situated on the banks of the River Bollin, and water power was a major source of energy, from the huge water wheel which worked until 1904. The mill is an excellent example of UK industrial heritage and contrasts the difference between life at the Mill in Styal, compared to Mills in cities such as Manchester, 12 miles away
