Port of the Moon (Bordeaux, France)
The Port of the Moon refers to the old port of the city, so called because of the crescent shape formed by the river Garonne at this point. The UNESCO World Heritage site designation, however, covers an area considerably larger than the port; it corresponds to the inside of the boulevards, almost half of the city area. UNESCO describes it as an “outstanding urban and architectural ensemble”. Its unity of neo-classical design reflects the Age of Enlightenment in which it was created, and almost 350 of its buildings are listed as of historic importance. It has also been a centre for the “exchange of human values” over 2000 years because of the port and its rich hinterland which generated the commercial wealth to develop as it has. The importance of the port is remembered in the crescent shape incorporated in the city’s coat of arms.
