The “Parc de la Tête d’Or” is spread over 117 hectares of land, making it the biggest in France. It is situated right in the heart of the city of Lyon, and takes its name from a golden head of Christ that is supposedly buried there. It first opened in 1856 and consists of botanical gardens, a zoo, a rose garden and a landscaped park on which grow trees of over a hundred years old. The park is open daily from 6am to 11pm from the beginning of April to the end of September and until 9pm the rest of the year. The zoo shelters over 1000 animals, which are looked after by 14 zoo keepers. It is open from 9am until 5pm in the winter and until 6.30pm in the summer months. The botanical gardens are open from 9am until 11.30am and from 1.30pm until 4.45pm. There are 15 000 plants, 6 000 of which are in greenhouses, which with a surface of 5200m², are the largest in France.
