Accommodations in Paris near Panthéon (Paris, France)
Panthéon (Paris, France)
The Pantheon was built between 1764-1790 by the architect Soufflot, for King Louis XV. Inspired by the Agrippa in Rome, Soufflot aimed to compete with Saint Peters in Rome and Saint Pauls in London. The site previously held a basilica dedicated to Saint Genviève dated 507 and founded by King Clovis. In 1744 King Louis XV vowed that he would replace the ruins with a worthy edifice for Saint Genevieve, if he recovered from his illness, which he did. The crypt shelters historical figures of France such as Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Jean Moulin, Voltaire or Jean Jaurès. Situated in the Quartier Latin of Paris, the Pantheon overlooks Paris from the top of the Montagne Sainte Geneviève. It is considered to be an important architectural achievement for its time. It stands 83 metres high, 110 metres long and 89 metres wide. The construction was finally finished by Soufflot’s pupil, Jean Baptiste Rondelet in 1789. It is open to the public daily from 10am to 6pm and costs 7€ for adults, 4€ for the 18 - 25, free for those 17 and under.
