Palais des Papes (Avignon, France)

The papal palace was constructed in the 14th century when the popes moved to Avignon from Rome because of the chaos following the election of Clement V. He and his six successors were based here from 1309 to 1377. It was the second and third Avignon popes who were responsible for the palace, built to house the papal court and to reflect the importance of the Holy See. It remains the largest gothic palace in Europe. There was an existing bishops’ palace on the rocky outcrop above the Rhone. Benedict XII, a former monk, began the work in an austere style, removing the opulence of the bishops’ palace and this part is known as the Palais Vieux. After him the luxury returned in what is referred to as the Palais Neuf. Visitors have access to a large part of the palace which has survived largely because it became a prison and barracks, although much of the interior was damaged. Of particular note are the Great Chapel, the St Martial Chapel with the frescoes by Giovannetti and the huge banqueting hall. The world famous Avignon festival held every summer has some of the performances in the palace courtyard. Details of opening hours, access facilities and prices are on the website. The palace, together with the Pont St Bénezet, Notre Dame des Doms, and the Petit Palais form a UNESCO World Heritage site.
