Osborne House was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1845 after her marriage to Prince Albert as a country residence. The Isle of Wight was already her favourite. The old house was demolished and rebuilt and the estate with adjacent farms stood in 340 acres overlooking the Solent. The house was decorated with portraits and frescoes, the corridors lined with sculptures and the rooms personalised with family photographs. The grounds were landscaped and the Walled Garden and Italianate Gardens are of particular note. The estate is now in the hands of English Heritage and guided tours are available. Opening hours: 10am - 5pm Daily (April - September) 10am - 4pm Daily (October) Guided tours only: November - March Closed: December 24 - 26; January 1 Tickets (House and gardens) Adult: £ 9.50 Senior: £ 7.10 Child: £ 4.80 English Heritage Members: free Family tickets available Entry to the grounds only is available Car parking is available in the grounds. The site is wheelchair accessible (except for the Walled Garden and Queen Victoria’s private apartment)
