The Olympic Stadium (Estadi Olimpic) on Mont Juic in Barcelona was the main venue of the 1992 Olympic Games which were held in the city between July 26th and August 21st and the location for the opening ceremony where the Olympic flame was lit. The original building on the site dates back to 1929 when it was used for the 1929 World’s Fair and it was intended to be the site of the 1936 Olympics which went instead to Berlin. The stadium visitors will see today was completely rebuilt for the 1992 games and has a capacity of 65000 seats and serves also as the stadium for one of Barcelona’s football teams, ‘Espanyol’. Visitors can stroll around the stadium, visit the Galeria Olimpica which has an exhibition about the 1992 games (entrance fee applies). The stadium is open to the public and entry is free. The Metro stop nearest to the stadium is Placa Espana on the Green line and buses also stop outside.
