Old Castle (Stuttgart, Germany)

The Old Castle dates back to the year 950 when a moated castle had been erected in its location to protect the stud farm after which the city has been named. In the early 14th century, with the arrival of the Counts of Wurttemberg, the castle was further developed and finally received a total rebuilt from 1553 to 1570, when it was modeled into the Renaissance building that can be seen today. It is especially famed for its Renaissance style inner courtyard which is adorned by many arcades and is regarded as one of the most magnificent in Germany. In 1931 it was heavily damaged by a fire and nearly totally destroyed during WW2 but has been rebuilt to its original plans. Today it is home to a part of the Museum of the State of Wurttemberg. The collection of the museum showcases the art and culture of the region from the Stone Ages until present day and its collection of European glass is one of the most valuable in Europe. Also be seen can the Crown Jewels of the Royal House of Wurttemberg and the treasures that have been found in the tomb of a Celtic prince in Hochdorf which dates back to the year 530 AD. . To gain information on temporary exhibitions please refer to the website. The museum is accessible for wheelchair user and offers facilities for the disabled. There are no admission fees for the inner courtyard and the chapel. Opening times : Tuesday to Sunday 10am 5 pm
