Nacionalni park Krka (Skradin, Croatia)

The Krka National Park lies about 5 kilometres from Skradin. Created in 1985, it is 109 square kilometres in size and includes the Krka and Čikola rivers. The park is especially known for the waterfalls on the Krka – 7 in all with a total drop of 242 metres. In between the falls the river forms lakes, and here and in the tributaries there is an abundance of wildlife and vegetation. Being in the Mediterranean climate zone, but also with damp and shady conditions, means a huge number of species can thrive including some that are endangered. The estuary of the Krka is within the park. It is 23.5 kilometres long and being relatively unpolluted has a rich variety of salt and fresh waterlife. Several excursions are available within the park: a cruise to Skradinski Buk, a trip to the island of Visovac with its Franciscan monastery, the falls at Roški Slap by boat or road and the Krka monastery. Several fortified sites built into the steep valley sides can also be visited. The park is popular with families and swimming is possible in the lakes. The website has details of prices and timetables for the various excursions.
