Michelham Priory (Hailsham, United Kingdom)

Michelham Priory at Upper Dicker near Hailsham is a former Augustinian priory dating back to 1229. It ceased to be a religious foundation at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century and became a farm and then a manor house. It was restored in the 20th century and given to the Sussex Archaeological Trust (more often called Sussex Past) in 1959. The interiors have been furnished to reflect the various stages of the priory’s past. Of particular interest at the site are the moat, the longest water-filled moat in England, and the watermill. Milling here is thought to date back to the 15th century, and the mill has been restored to working order. Also to be visited are a working forge, a rope museum, a 16th century barn and gardens. The property hosts various events during the year and an evening “ghost walk” every two weeks. There is a shop, restaurant, car park and picnic area, and most of the site is wheelchair accessible. The visitor season runs from 1 March to 31 October.
