Lizard Point (Helston, United Kingdom)

Lizard Point, near Helston, is the most southerly point on the UK mainland. For shipping, it is the point at which the Channel ends and the Atlantic begins, and it was from here that the Spanish Armada was first sighted. It is also a place to be treated with caution as it is known as the “graveyard of ships”. There is a lighthouse on the Point and a lifeboat station about two miles away. Marconi used the site to develop radio transmission in the early 20th century and the Wireless Telegraph Station still stands and can be visited. The name Lizard probably derives from the Cornish “Lys Ardh” meaning “High Court” and is not a description of rock formations. Coincidentally the underlying rock is serpentinite, a metamorphic rock used decoratively in the surrounding area. The area is now managed by the National Trust and is open all year round. It is a popular spot for its dramatic cliffs and wildlife. Visitors can park (no charge) in the village of Lizard and from there it is a 1 mile walk. A café operates from March to October.
