Accommodations in Avignon near Le musée du Petit Palais (Avignon, France)
Le musée du Petit Palais (Avignon, France)
The Petit Palais housed the bishopric when the popes took over the former bishops’™ palace to create the Palais des Papes. It suffered damage during the wars of the schism at the beginning of the 15th century when there were rival popes in Rome and Avignon but was restored by the future Pope Julius II by 1503. It was a school from the 19th century right up to 1976 but now houses an art gallery. The collection of more than 300 works covers Italian mediaeval and renaissance art and also the Avignon School. This school of painting flourished in the 14th century when the popes were in residence and their commissions attracted artists to the court. It is characterised by a simplicity of style and use of light, which places it between the Italian and Flemish schools. The foremost exponent was Simone Martini, some of whose works are here. Details of opening hours are on the website. Together with the Palais des Papes, Pont St Bénezet and Notre Dame des Doms, the Petit Palais forms a UNESCO World heritage site.
