The Lawrence Batley Theatre opened in 1994 but it is housed in a former Methodist church building that dates from 1819. The building was designed by the architect Joseph Kaye who was also responsible for design of the town’s railway station, which has a similar architectural facade. Both buildings have a Grade 2 listed status. It takes its name from a local businessman called Lawrence Batley who donated a large sum of money towards the theatre. The seating capacity is 477 and it is accessible by disabled visitors.
