La Conciergerie (Paris, France)
The Conciergerie is located directly in the heart of the Paris, on the Île de la Cité. It is the oldest remaining part of the Palace - the la Cité which was founded during the 6th century by King Clovis and served as a royal residence, from Hugh Capet (10th century) and also as a seat of the government. The palace was extended and fortified by the Capetian and early Valois kings over the centuries that followed until King Charles decided to move his royal household to the nearby Louvre in 1358.The famous Gothic Saint Chapelle was added in 1248 by King Saint Louis. The palace remained seat of the government and administration until it was turned into a prison in 1391. During the Reign of Terror period of the French Revolution the Conciergerie held up to 1200 prisoners at a time and was home to the Revolutionary Tribunal that sent more than 2500 to the guillotine within just over 2 years. The most famous prisoners who fell victim to the death sentence during this time include Robespierre, Danton, Madame du Barry and Queen Marie Antoinette whose cell later was turned into a chapel.
