Kingston Bridge was officially opened in 1828 and replaced a much older bridge that had been there since medieval times. The original Kingston Bridge was the only way to cross the River Thames between London Bridge and Staines Bridge until 1729, when Putney Bridge was built. When the new bridge opened in 1828 it was originally a toll bridge but tolls were abolished in 1870. Today it carries 50000 vehicles per day with around 2000 vehicles per hour at peak times. The bridge is 115 metres long and carries the A308 trunk road.
