Kenilworth Castle & Elizabethan Garden (Kenilworth, United Kingdom)
The origins of Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire date back to around 1120 when it was constructed for defence purposes in a typical Norman “motte and keep” style where the “motte” refers to the round mound of earth on which the “keep” was built. Much of the original stone keep still remains although the rest of what we see today dates largely from the 14th and 15th centuries when the original timber areas were replaced with stone. The castle has important historical links to three of England’s notable monarchs (King Henry V, King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I). It was a favourite haunt of Elizabeth I and is the place where she spent much of her time with her close friend and suitor Robert Dudley, the 1st Earl of Leicester. Surrounding the castle are large landscaped gardens that feature several original Elizabethan buildings. Kenilworth Castle is cared for by English Heritage.
