Horsell Common (Woking, United Kingdom)

Horsell Common in Woking is rare in being a privately owned common with public access. It covers 830 acres and much of it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The owners work actively to preserve its ecology and wildlife while also preserving access. Rare Belted Galloway cattle are used to graze and prevent scrub encroachment, while for birds such as the nightjar the Common is a breeding ground of European importance. Heathland butterflies and rare pond plants also thrive and roe deer, adders and woodcocks are found. The Common was inhabited in Bronze Age times, and three barrows dating from about 1500 BC can be seen. Two are bell barrows, a design mostly found in Wessex and rare this far east. A more modern burial ground is the Muslim Burial Ground, constructed for soldiers of the Empire killed in the two world wars. The Common is also famous for extra-terrestrial life. H G Wells lived in Woking when writing The War of the Worlds, and located the Martian landing area in a former sand pit, now a site of pilgrimage for SF fans. The sand pit is also a habitat of rare bees and spider-hunting wasps.
