Holyrood Scottish Parliament Building (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

Officially opened in October 2004 by Queen Elizabeth, this building designed by Enric Miralles is now the home of the Scottish Parliament. The main materials (steel, oak, concrete, glass and granite) used in its construction are meant to reflect the landscapes and history of Scotland. The roof of the debating chamber in particular takes the form of a boat. The building won a number of architectural awards and is free to visit, although a paid guided tour is available at a cost of £5.00. When the Parliament is in session, visiting times are 9 am to 7 pm, and at other times 10 am to 6 pm from April to October and 10 am to 4 pm from November to March.
