Holocaust Mahnmal (Berlin, Germany)
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which is also known as Holocaust Memorial, is located in central Berlin. The 19,000 square-metre (4.7 acre) memorial incorporates 2,711 concrete stelae, which vary in height and are arranged in a grid-like pattern, on an uneven ground, to achieve a wave-like effect. The field of stelae was planned by architect Peter Eisenmann who wanted to disorient the visitor with this design. The memorial was inaugurated exactly 60 years after the end of WW 2 on May 10, 2005 and opened to the public 2 days later. An underground museum, called “Ort der Information” is located beneath the memorial at its southeastern corner. The aim of this exhibition is to fill the somewhat impersonal upper part of the memorial with the names and stories of the victims. The museum holds information of the names of all Jewish victims of the Holocaust, highlights the fates of several Jewish families, offers information about the historical development of the Holocaust , video recordings of survivors and more. The field of stelae is open at all times, for information about the opening times of the information centre please visit the website. Admission is free
