Hamiton Mausoleum (Hamilton, United Kingdom)

Hamilton Mausoleum was built to be the burial place of the Dukes of Hamilton. It was commissioned by the 10th duke and work began in 1848. It was completed in 1857, five years after the death of the 10th duke, and he and 16 other members of the family were buried in the crypt. Later subsidence meant they had to be moved to a local cemetery. The 37 metre-high domed building is one of the largest mausolea in the world. The exterior is composed of massive sandstone blocks and the original bronze doors were cast from Ghiberti’s doors on the Baptistery in Florence. The floor is a marble mosaic and the 10th duke’s Egyptian sarcophagus rested on a black marble pedestal. Its use as a chapel, however, was constrained by a very long echo. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm and Sundays 12 noon - 5pm. There is a car park and refreshments.
