Guildhall (London, United Kingdom)

The Guildhall of London has been home to the government of the city since 600 years. Building works on the current guildhall have started in 1411 but it is believed that at least one earlier guildhall must have existed in the capital as documents from as early as 1128 refer to one. During the middle ages it was home to the Lord Mayor of London and the powerful and influential guilds who were the ruling elite of the time. Today the administrative centre of the City of London Cooperation is located in modern office buildings that surround the original guildhall but it is still of importance as a venue for state and civic banquets. It also hosts the meetings of the City of London’s elected assembly, the Court of Common Council and the Freedom of the City ceremony. London’s guildhall is the the only secular stone structure that has survived the Great Fire of London as well as WW2, although its Great Hall suffered minor damages during the fire of 1666. The guildhall is open to the public whenever it is not in use and it is possible to rent it as a venue for events. To be seen inside the building are its Great Hall, the Old Library, Print Room, Livery Hall and the crypts. The entrance is free.
