Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman London's Amphitheatre (London, United Kingdom)

The City of London has been collecting works of art since more than 300 years and parts of this collection, which now comprises around 4000 pieces of art, can be seen in the Guildhall Art Gallery.On display are always around 250 paintings at a time, less well known paintings from this vast collection are displayed during regularly changing temporary exhibitions. The Guildhall Art Gallery can be found right next to the historic Guildhall. The current building dates back to 1999 and replaces an older building that was destroyed during WW2. In 1988 archaeologists discovered the remains of London’s only Roman amphitheatre under the Guildhall Yard. The arena has since been excavated but remains under the ground, it can be accessed via the Guildhall Art Gallery on whose basement level it is located. A semi-circular ring of black stones in the pavement of Guildhall Yard marks the location, shape and size of the arena. Opening hours: Monday - Saturday: 10.00am - 5.00pm Sunday: 12.00noon - 4.00pm Last admission 30 minutes before closure Admission: Adults £2.50 Concessions £1 There is no admission charge on Fridays and after 3.30 pm, for children under the age of 16, Art Fund members,members of the Friends of Guildhall Art Gallery and City of London residents and workers. Services: Toilets, lift, baby changing room, cloak room, museum shop,children’s activities,guided tours available.The gallery and amphitheatre are accessible for wheelchair users.
